1. How do you define the main issue of your project in relation with the theme “Living Cities Imagining architecture taking care of the milieus”? And in which way do you think your project can contribute to an ecological and/or social evolution?
The Groenewoud project works with the typical post-war cauliflower neighborhood. Such urban typology is facing common challenge of social issues, deteriorating facility and public space, climate change, and housing pressure. We offer a universal and flexible solution that allows for transformation rooted in the existing community. All scale and subject – social and spatial, building and landscape, living and non-living – work as integrated components of a whole.

2. How did the issues of your design and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
The area is built for large families, while current residents are usually a small household. This requires different housing typology. We transform the existing houses into smaller apartments. The transformation comes with densification, which improves critical mass for facilities and public space. Various target groups, especially the elderly and students, can therefore find a better living environment here.

PROJECT:

3. Have you treated these issues previously? What were the reference projects that inspired yours?
Post-war neighborhoods and collective housing are common themes of our daily work. We are experienced with comparable areas in different Dutch cities. In addition, transformation projects in Denmark (Urbanplanen, Gellerup) and collective housing in Switzerland (Hunziker Areal, Zollhaus, etc.) serve as constant inspiration.

SITE:

4. How can your project be implemented together with the actors through a negotiated process and in time. How did you consider this issue in your project?
The transformation of post-war neighbors depends on several stakeholders. The alliance between the Municipality and housing corporations is at the core. Residents, developers and urban planners play crucial roles in this. We can offer our expertise in both spatial design and strategic process.

5. How did you form the team for the competition and if so what are the skills you associated?
Re-Studio is an independent design agency for urban planning and architecture. The three team members have their specialties in master planning, architectural design and house design. Together we deliver an integrated vision on the multi-scaled design assignment.

6. How could this prize help you in your professional career?
Europan gives us the opportunity to put our experience and knowledge into a fascinating assignment. We hope to start a long-term collaboration with the municipality of Tilburg to provide research, advice and design service for a step-by-step transformation of Groenewoud.
