1. How do you define the main issue of your project in relation with the theme “Living Cities Imagining architecture taking care of the milieus”? And in which way do you think your project can contribute to an ecological and/or social evolution?
In the context of the Gersycoop site in Fleurance, the urge is to increase the ground permeability. At the heart of our project, we designed “The Green Smile” as a forested area of more than 2200 sqm, transforming the street into a lush green urban facade. By vastly planting indigenous vegetation, we aim to create an inviting habitat for local humans and non-humans and establish a vibrant natural setting.
2. How did the issues of your design and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
Ambitious projects, if disconnected from economical realities, no longer arouses the enthusiasm of local communities. We believe in measured excavations of the site in order to create a coherent urban structure. The intervention has to be sober in both construction and deconstruction, leading to rationalized interventions that highlight the inherent spatial qualities.
PROJECT:
Mutation of existing structures is the only way we should consider architecture nowadays. In order to compensate for the human global footprint, we have to give space for forest-like landscapes to develop and flourish. These can cohabitate with former structures, conscious human housing and new types of culture which integrate nature in the arts.
SITE:
Harnessing situational intelligence, we applied ourselves to adopt a radical position in the programmation. We avoided complex imbrications to generate “organized stripes” that can be adapted individually through time. A clear partition to facilitate scheduling is the strategic move we chose to be efficient regarding the arrangement of the buildings.
REFERENCES:
The three of us are architects and studied together in Strasbourg where we graduated in 2017. Each of us brings their culture forged by specific interests and foreign experience to the team. We are used to collaborating for competitions. Now we also share our working space which facilitates sharing ideas and learning from others on a daily basis.
6. How could this prize help you in your professional career?
We are honored that Europan - which represents a prestigious institution in our field of practice - would recognize our proposition. We are optimistic about the follow-up to the project and hope to have the opportunity to contribute to draw the future of the Gersycoop site in Fleurance.
