Europan 8 Roma

runner-up

The public space assumes a strategic role in defining the relationships between the residential situations and the new uses of the territory. The purpose is to give the park a design able to evoke the quality of a suburban atmosphere. A network of routes divides the whole area into different areas with different uses, public and private: a system of urban orchards is integrated with a planned green spaces system. It is still public space, considered as the whole of the public, semi-public and semi-private spheres, that defines the planned outline of the residential building. The typological choice of a building with internal courtyards, with a succession of semi-public, semi-private and private open spaces, contributes to the creation of different types of micro-communities directly relating to each other.

This project is connected to the following themes

Housing - Typology

The use of the courtyard type allows a gradual transition from public to private space, in reflecting the idea that “Semi” operates in the “intermediate space between collective and private life”.

Nature - Proximity / Horizon

The project establishes a linear landscape path in the Roman diffuse suburbs; this path weaves in the existing built fragments and makes a link along which new built ensembles are located, setting up a game between the private proximity landscape and the one at the territorial scale.
