1. How did you form the team for the competition?
04401 is a project group. Young architects, Ph.D. students, lecturers and researchers meet in a work group and create a homogeneous complex of knowledge and experience in the field of architecture and landscape studies. The members of the group work together in various activities such as research, architecture competitions, state-funded projects and university experiences in the School of Architecture of Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy).
2. How do you define the main issue of your project, and how did you answer on this session main topic: Adaptability through Self-Organization, Sharing and/or Project (Process)?
The main theme of the project is the re-definition of an environmental system through a new urban model that develops in time phases, structured on water lines and basins, and on a new vision of public space that puts everyday life into direct contact with nature. The system is double dynamic: it responds on the one hand to the fluctuations of the canal and on the other, to the habitat changes in its forms and uses. The phases do not want to be a rigid pre-set land occupation system, but a flexible way to interpret the needs of future generations.
3. How did this issue and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
The study of the forms of the historical city led us to think about the relationship between closed systems, fully included in urban fragments and on open margin systems suspended between the "urban" and "rural". At the same time, the canal dynamism and its sudden flooding is an important critical aspect that the project wants to turn into added value.
4. Have you treated this issue previously? What were the reference projects that inspired yours?
The theme of habitat adaptability in relation to environmental and landscape issues is a fundamental part of the training and research work of the team, continuously fed by the project. Important references for this work are: the Europan 12 Hoganas winning project by Arenas-Basabe-Palacios "TwinPhenomena" in respect to the theme of growth, which is flexible and adaptable; Michel Desvigne’s urban project for Paris-Saclay, for the concept of water foundations; and also the project "Sociopolis" by Vicente Guallart on water use in "new" urban environments.
5. Today –at the era of economic crisis and sustainability– the urban-architectural project should reconsider its production method in time; how did you integrate this issue in your project?
The project tries to provide a response to an environmental critical system through the definition of a supporting structure defined by water, which is conceptually wide-meshed, and able to embrace and manage different architectural forms in the future. The new sustainability towards which the project aims is an auto-poietic model, able to continuously maintain itself in a cyclical manner through recycling and reuse.
6. Is it the first time you have been awarded a prize at Europan? How could this help you in your professional career?
04401 architects is a project and research group which combined over time complementary professional figures that share training and cultural approaches to the architecture project.
In this edition of Europan, the group in its extended form wins for the first time, but is fed by the experience of other victories. In fact, two of the group members, Adriano Dessì and Silvia Mocci (together with Carlo Atzeni) were awarded in two previous editions, 1st prize in Europan 9 - in Carbonia (IT) and runner-up in Europan 10 - in Seilh (FR).
To obtain, within the structure of Europan, two awards in the same edition for the quality of our work by two different juries, in different places and for different themes like Sankt Pölten and Azenha do Mar is the confirmation of the intellectual interest of our theoretical basis and its translation into specific projects for places and communities.
We believe that Europan can positively affect our careers and lead us to new ways of dialogue with one of the most interesting articulations of architectural intelligentsia, and to new possibilities of comparison within the European dimension.
