Europan 10 Forchheim

winner

2009
The proposal develops a creative model which derives its form from the mediaeval townscape with steep roofs and half-timbering on one side and the industrial architecture of the neighbourhood with sheds on the other side. A wide variety of uses is concentrated in a divisible strip of public, semi-public and private land. New, interesting spatial situations are created whilst key elements are retained. The result is a series of differentiated roofed and open public spaces. The concept can be implemented in stages and remains extremely flexible. The multitude and variety of uses, protagonists, spaces and shapes will give Forchheim North a strong new identity, making this district a special and unique part of the town with a substantial, positive impact on the neighbouring districts.

2010-
The implementation process continued the pursuit of this new identity using the same architectural devices as in the Europan competition, with constant reference to the local, mediaeval townscape.
The implementation was an opportunity to further improve the main ideas of the competition.
The special strength of the approach was to work with a modern architectural language in a regional context. This outside view, together with a precise analysis of the environment, resulted in a rather unusual project, which initially baffled the municipality and then aroused curiosity. The result was the invitation to take part in another competition.

This project is connected to the following themes

Shared spaces - Intensification by superposition

The project proposes to insert into the site a strip of buildings with a neo-mediaeval typology, containing a number of superimposed programmes.

Housing - Morphology

An original and bold morphology which literally unfolds within the existing building fabric, generating a multitude of new situations out of the resulting conflict, with rich outcomes in terms of new uses and a new vision of urban space.
