Europan 8 Livorno

The project focuses on the piazza Barriera Garibaldi and the former horticultural market. The former customs and the goods warehouses areas are converted into public craft workshops to achieve cooperation between older people, young people and immigrants living in the area. The construction of two blocks puts the old warehouses into communication. In the two new blocks there are study and meeting rooms and the library. The external walls have a covering that regulates the sunlight during the day. In the square there is a series of terraces disposed at different heights for bars, children’s playground, bowls fields. The former market area is designed for living functions. It is conceived according to three different functional levels. A covered route crosses the entire length of the street-market and connects the buildings and the different functions.

Shared spaces - Programmatic patchwork

The project enriches public life by introducing a dense network of urban functions and by superimposing different public and private spaces.
