runner-up

1996
The site is covered by a succession of perpendicular rows of houses, corresponding to the wide strips, which define the urban boundary of the avenue with its heavy traffic. Linked to the surrounding fabric by tree-lined street, a network of alternating public and private spaces provide users with a diversity of spatial volumes that favour social contact. Internal streets provide access to the housing and transitional spaces, articulating the urban and residential scales.

1997-2000
In July 1997 the city organised a further competition between the 2 runner-up teams for an urban design for the whole district with 250 housing units, a shopping centre, car park and public square.
The winner was the project by Roland Montrone.  He defined the boundaries of the site, created a clear relation with the slope of the site, and defined the site as a central space with pedestrian connections with the existing districts.
Nevertheless, the city asked the architects to make a few changes: to remove one block along the main avenue while retaining the same density. The authorities also wanted to change the access to the housing, but this was rejected by the architects as changing the entire concept, so the original system was accepted.
At the beginning of 1998, the architect defined the solids and empty spaces and the building code. At the end of the year, he produced the building master plan defining the architectural, urban and volumetric principles.  He proposed dividing the site into 5 plots with different contractors who would employ their own architects for the construction. He also defined external access such as alleyways, footbridges and staircases.

2001-2005
Roland Montrone remained as the overall construction supervisor to ensure the coherence of the plan. He also designed the public spaces for the whole area with the help of a landscaper.
In order to implement one part of the project, lots 4 and 5 (88 housing units), Roland Montrone worked with Cube Atelier to design revised typologies taking account of financial constraints, but the layout principles and the basic concept remain the same, and in fact are reinforced with ground floor activities.
Lots 1 to 3 were built by other architects. So far, housing units and a supermarket have been built.
