1. How did you form the team for the competition?

Most of the group members were acquainted from previous experiences on competition and during studies at the university Politecnico di Milano.

2. How do you define the main issue of your project, and how did you answer on this session main topic: the place of productive activities within the city?

Šibenik is a touristic city, so the trick was to merge this with the production. The project site is located between the city centre and the Krka National Park. We are talking about an area of 330.000 square meters in the heart of the city. We decided to create a “gradient” in which we developed a more urban production, as hosting, local craftsmanship and the sport area, near the urban fabric, and a more rural production as vineyard, orchards, farms, on the other side. This project focuses on the implementation of new relationships and connections between the tourists, local people and production. ProducTourism offers not only a nice trip where you will only take advantage of the resources of the place, but you will also be able to contribute to the site.

3. How did this issue and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?

The project site is in a very interesting area, which also overlooks the sea. We basically subdivided the space into three bubbles: the southern one, near to a residential fabric, is dedicated to leisure, local housing and hosting. The northern one is the production, and the eastern one is a recreation area for locals and tourists. If you imagine those bubbles you can understand that the production works as a unifying element.

4. Have you treated this issue previously? What were the reference projects that inspired yours?

No, that was the first time we developed a project focusing on production. Although the idea to work in exchange of a place to stay is not new, it is usually an isolated episode. Here we provide an entire site dedicated to that kind of tourism as a system. Working on the project, we used the idea of work and travel experience and for the design the common spaces we used as a reference the Superkilen in Copenhagen where the main focus was to develop the coastline.

5. Urban-architectural projects like the ones in Europan can only be implemented together with the actors through a negotiated process and in time. How did you consider this issue in your project?

This project includes information about the stages of realization of the project adaptable to different scenarios. The process has to go from the current state until the fully functioning project by 2024 through the completion of different phases. The first one includes the soil remediation and the creation of temporary activities and structures for workers on site and the tourists visiting Sibenik, to start a relationship with the site. The second phase is all about development and construction of all the facilities by 2023, while welcoming the first ProducTourists to work on prefabricated elements. The final stage is when all the facilities are constructed and ProducTourists are fully engaged in different activities.

6. Is it the first time you have been awarded a prize at Europan? How could this help you in your professional career?

Roy Nash was runner up in Europan 11 in the site of Norkopping, Sweden, we, as as team, collaborated for the first time in such a competion. Whether or not it has helped our professional careers, it was first an incredible opportunity and experience to take part in. Receiving a Special Mention will motivate us to participate in other competitions and try to do our best in the future.
