INTERVIEW (en anglais)
1. How did you form the team for the competition?
We went to the same architecture school in Milano, but we ended up meeting very far from it. We met in Beijing (CN), where we collaborated professionally for many years in the same office. Since 2018, we have separated and moved to different cities. Europan 15 was the perfect opportunity to work together again and continue the dialogue between us on themes we are both passionate about.
2. How do you define the main issue of your project, and how did you answer on this session main topic: the place of productive activities within the city?
The project is structured to harness the many physical and urbanistic constraints of the site and to promote daily social interactions. The proposal addresses the topic of creating a productive city at three different scales:
- Rooftop City: A green spine provides continuity with Kop Dakpark and extends the network of outdoor activities across the city;
- Rooftop Neighbourhood: The typological variety and the elevated central garden allow for productive adjacencies between public and private activities;
- Rooftop Building: A new flexible work/home typology with accesses at multiple levels, provides the opportunity for different simultaneous uses.
3. How did this issue and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
Our proposal focuses on creating an inclusive space where diverse communities and the architectures that embody them come together and foster social cohesion.
The challenge of negotiating between different levels within the site becomes an opportunity for interaction between different programs. Small businesses facing Vierhavensstraat are also directly connected at an elevated level to the adjacent central garden. Subtle changes in height demarcate the transition between public and private green areas.
Introducing a new work-home typology, “COOP*WORK*PARK” mediates between the traditional home and the open space of the “workshop”. It allows startups to operate in an innovation ecosystem and seeks a synergy with the adjacent Rotterdam Makers District.
4. Have you treated this issue previously? What were the reference projects that inspired yours?
Our work dealt with mixed neighbourhoods and rapidly transforming cities. This project has been a great opportunity to extend these studies to a new context.
5. Urban-architectural projects like the ones in Europan can only be implemented together with the actors through a negotiated process and in time. How did you consider this issue in your project?
The project has been planned with careful consideration paid to its implementation over time by different actors. We envision an inclusive process where the diversity within the project can address different needs.
The buildings are separated to facilitate phasing and development by different stakeholders. However, the grid provides overall consistency while accommodating individual inhabitation over time.
The height change of the proposal allows small commercial activities to develop on the elevated level while the ground floor continues its transformation from a large market to small retail at a slower pace.
6. Is it the first time you have been awarded a prize at Europan? How could this help you in your professional career?
It is the first time and we are very honoured. Europan is a great competition, as it provides a unique opportunity to test ideas on real challenging sites with multiple actors. This award is a great encouragement to keep working on our research and independent projects.

Has your team, together or separately, already conceived or implemented some projects and/or won any competition? If yes, which ones?
We have collaborated professionally for many years in the same office and independently. We won a few competitions with other teams, but never together.
