1. How do you define the main issue of your project in relation with the theme “Living Cities Imagining architecture taking care of the milieus”? And in which way do you think your project can contribute to an ecological and/or social evolution?
The built environment is not only composed of buildings but also activities, atmospheres and stories. Our project reflects on the temporality of actions and their traces on the urban fabric: our goal was to reconnect the 'functional voids' existing within the city of Makarska through an organic intervention to create a new urbanity for the local population and tourists. Preserving the atmosphere and materiality of the site and implementing a new vegetal system, FishingNETwork! aims to become a platform for creating new stories in Makarska.
2. How did the issues of your design and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
FishingNETwork! ensures a plurality of spaces with specific functions (required by the competition brief), providing at the same time a high degree of flexibility to accommodate different activities during the day and in different periods of the year. The project preserves the existing vegetation, the existing buildings and the rare open spaces in the historic centre, exploiting the existing orography to articulate the new functions creating a variety of public spaces.
PROJECT:
Our home country often allows us to work on the relationship between the historical city and contemporary architecture, on how traces of the past become starting points for future solutions. Beyond a careful analysis of the existing urban fabric, in this project we have been influenced by, among others, the Sverre Fehn Bienniale Pavilion, for its ability to accommodate functional flexibility, interaction with nature and atmosphere, and by the work of Peter Zumthor.
SITE:
Future implementation and design feasibility (from both technical, constructive, and sustainability points of view) were among the main goals in our design proposal. We decided to provide a solution that takes into consideration and meets all the requirements highlighted within the competition brief and the challenges of climate change. Participation in the following design phase will be fundamental to further tailor-made all the different functions to the needs of the new users.
REFERENCES:
We are two young architects who space their research in the field of architecture through the instrument of competition, even outside of our everyday professional activities. We have a multi-disciplinary approach and for this reason, there are no exclusive skills within our team: we always tackle different topics that allow us to expand our knowledge and architectural skills.
6. How could this prize help you in your professional career?
This award stems from participation in many previous architecture competitions. We believe that design competition is a fundamental instrument to encourage and promote young professionals to continue research in architecture. We believe that Europan is one of the largest international showcases for emerging young architects, and our goal is to continue to engage with them and with the previous generations that Europan has led to success.
