1. How do you define the main issue of your project in relation with the theme “Living Cities Imagining architecture taking care of the milieus”? And in which way do you think your project can contribute to an ecological and/or social evolution?
The project studies the island's traditional territorial organisation techniques, using eco-friendly methods that blend with the natural landscape. Addressing the housing crisis, it adopts low-density planning with high occupancy, maintaining the urban amenities while preserving the natural environment in daily life.
2. How did the issues of your design and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
Identifying a key challenge at the largest undeveloped plot in Ibiza under private ownership, we aimed to use administrative flexibility to address issues related to mass tourism and insularity. Our project prioritises a respectful integration with the natural landscape configuration, fostering a seamless connection with the northern natural lands.
PROJECT:
Yes, we have previously undertaken social housing projects and urban planning. Although we didn't have a specific reference during the process, we drew inspiration from the Smithsons' Robin Hood Gardens. Pragmatically, we look to housing developments in Spain from the 60s and 70s, where cars were not dominant, emphasising quality in housing, spaces, and relationships with the environment—mainly parks and green areas.
SITE:
A model where current landowners collaborate with the government to address the island's housing issues, setting aside speculative activities. Unfortunately, we deem this scenario less feasible, as ambition may often supersede moderation.
REFERENCES:
Since studying together at ETSAM, we, along with other colleagues, have participated in various competitions that triggered our interest. We enjoy working in diverse teams and collaborating with individuals outside our usual circles. This enables each member to contribute expertise from diverse backgrounds, enriching the group.
6. How could this prize help you in your professional career?
While not achieving a first prize, the acknowledgment of one's work serves as a motivating factor. It inspires a commitment to further advancement, continuous improvement, and the continual contribution of new knowledge.
