1. How do you define the main issue of your project in relation with the theme “Living Cities Imagining architecture taking care of the milieus”? And in which way do you think your project can contribute to an ecological and/or social evolution?
The approach consists of revealing and enhancing the existing ecological, urban, landscape and architectural frameworks, developing the project within their continuity and over time. Three actions propose to transform the site into several living environments:
- Resuscitating the Blosne (renaturation of the watercourse)
- Reviving the soil (desoiling and fertilization)
- Stitching up the infrastructure (mutation and expansion: from monofunctional to multifunctional).

The aim is not to homogenise the two sides of the ring road, but to clarify the structures of the territory to enhance the contrasts between the Orson plateau and the Blosne district and reinforce their interdependence.

2. How did the issues of your design and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
Three main issues emerged from the exploration and study of the site:
- An archetype of the «archipelago city»- maintaining and intensifying contrasts ?
- Exploring, discovering and recognising places - intuitions to question ?
- Meeting, living, working - from monofunctionalism to multifunctionalism ?

PROJECT:

3. Have you treated these issues previously? What were the reference projects that inspired yours?
Agathe Vincent's work focuses on the evolution of environments. She worked on the preservation of living milieus within Zeppelin Paysage and on transitional urban planning at the Institut Paris Region. She studied changes along Rennes ring road during her time as a student.
The architectural projects developed by bap (Jordan Froger and Mathias Deniaud) are based on observation and the ability of a situation to evolve, to inscribe the project in its own specific logic. Each project is about finding the best conditions for exploiting potential.

SITE:

4. How can your project be implemented together with the actors through a negotiated process and in time. How did you consider this issue in your project?
The project is not the result of actions that cannot be dissociated from one another, ultimately leading to a finished entity. On the contrary, it is conceived as a succession of possible, autonomous events. In other words, they are independent and can exist by themselves and for themselves without the need to rely on the future to function. This strategy enables us to experiment with agile processes that leave room for the unpredictable. In this way, the project can be easily co-constructed with Rennes Métropole to adapt to changes of the territory.

REFERENCES:

5. How did you form the team for the competition and if so what are the skills you associated?
We combined our skills - urban planner, architect for Agathe Vincent and architects for bap - to develop a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary response, from the territorial and landscape scale to the architectural one.

6. How could this prize help you in your professional career?
We're delighted to have taken part in this competition and that our work has attracted so much attention. Both because, as Rennais, we're attached to this area, and because it's been an opportunity for us to reflect on subjects that are important to us: the preservation & regeneration of living environments and that of a concrete infrastructure from the 70/80s. Europan has enabled us to think about society and the future of the Rennes metropolitan area and its "archipelago city" concept. We look forward to continuing our discussions with Rennes Métropole to play an active part in the necessary transformation of the CHU Sud site.

TEAM IDENTITY
Legal status:
 collective of independants architects
Team name: bap
Average age of the associates: 31 years old

Has your team, together or separately, already conceived or implemented some projects and/or won any competition? if so, which ones?
Europan 17 is the first competition we won as a team. Mathias DENIAUD and Agathe VINCENT have already worked together for competition without winning. bap ( Mathias DENIAUD and Jordan FROGER) have already worked together for several years as employees of an architectural firm in Rennes. Since 2023, they have been designing their own projects, for both private and public commissions.
