INTERVIEW (en anglais)

1. How did you form the team for the competition?

We are an anonymous collective born, mostly, in the modest but vibrant School of Architecture of Cartagena. In this case our international experience (Nl architect, Mecanoo, Martin Lejarraga Architecture Office and Lab5) was an asset to choose the members of the team. We all know each other from our studies and work in Cartagena and each of us has complementary skills that make our team unique.

2. How do you define the main issue of your project, and how did you answer on this session main topic: the place of productive activities within the city?

The proposal is a commitment to an open and flexible public space, The Beach. By joining the most famous green area of the city with the harbour, a straightforward bandage of public situations is settled, which main objective is the production of leisure for the city of Helsingborg. The Beach is an open and free space, structured by intangible limits and conditioned by climate, plants or human activities. Amusement is the product offered to the city by The Beach.

3. How did this issue and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?

The necessity of enhancing the public space in Helsingborg, and the strategical position of the site (acting as a barrier between the city and the see), were crucial statements to propose a massive ‘machine’ of collective leisure production for the citizens. The intervention reconfigures the movements of the district due to its connecting spirit.

4. Have you treated this issue previously? What were the reference projects that inspired yours?

Our proposal learns from the self-organization and freedom of the beaches in Spain, which become producers of happiness and amusement. They are attractor areas for people all over the world. Those public and non-restricted spaces are the ones that inspired us.

5. Urban-architectural projects like the ones in Europan can only be implemented together with the actors through a negotiated process and in time. How did you consider this issue in your project?

Our project understands this process and learn from it, that is why we proposed different, independent and self-sufficient phases for its completion in time.

6. Is it the first time you have been awarded a prize at Europan? How could this help you in your professional career?

Yes, it is. Being awarded at Europan is for us another step forward in our career, making us feel confident and with sense that we are in the right way. In addition, we know this recognition is great for our curriculum, taking into account that our proposal has already called the attention of media in Spain.
