INTERVIEW (en anglais)
1. How did you form the team for the competition?
Aut Aut Architettura often collaborates with other offices and professionals. In this case we worked with Flavio Graviglia, proposing the same team configured for Europan 14 (Alcoy).
2. How do you define the main issue of your project, and how did you answer on this session main topic: the place of productive activities within the city?
The project defines a strategy to sew up the medieval city and the outer developments through the integration and enhance, within a new mixed district, of the spatial and functional qualities of the urban fabrics currently present in Visby. The new settlement is conceived in continuity with the poetics of the old city, but still capable of accommodating comforts and qualities of contemporary architecture. A wide pedestrian area made up of squares and streets is enliven by ateliers, studios, restaurants, cafes, and shops. Housing develops on this plinth, facing both the bustling public space and the private quiet roof gardens of the courtyards. The integration of different typologies and functions within the project site allows for the development of a synergy between activities that guarantee 24/7 vitality. Shared productive spaces and home-work integration or proximity are key points of the design, being the basis of a district grounded on the new economy and sustainability. Circular local circuits are encouraged by a combination of functions that spans from vegetables/fruit self-production to plastic collection and recycling.
3. How did this issue and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
We perceived the site needs as very much focused on finding a strategy to position a car park within the plot and densify the area while avoiding commercial premises. According to the brief, the attention on productive activities within the city seemed to be secondary.
4. Have you treated this issue previously? What were the reference projects that inspired yours?
It as probably the first time we faced a similar issue. We’ve studied several projects, but maybe the key references have been Kroyers Plads in Copenhagen (COBE) and Mouvaux Housing in Mouvaux (LAN)
5. Urban-architectural projects like the ones in Europan can only be implemented together with the actors through a negotiated process and in time. How did you consider this issue in your project?
The project takes into consideration a complex scheme where present actors (municipality, current users, existing commercial premises) and new actors (young inhabitants, creatives, students, investors, tourists, entrepreneurs) have been merged within both spaces and concepts of the intervention. This scheme constitutes a basis to establish a series of panel discussions that should accompany the development.
6. Is it the first time you have been awarded a prize at Europan? How could this help you in your professional career?
This is the first time for our group. One of the partners of Aut Aut Architettura got a special mention at Europan 13 (Trondheim). We hope to participate, together with the winner and the runner up, in a collective discussion with the Municipality.
