Europan 10 Nyon

runner-up

The Plantaz site offers extraordinary conditions to experiment with new forms of interaction between nature and the city. The existence of three ecosystems of spontaneous vegetation is an opportunity to improve the natural environment and to foster sustainable urban development. The need to reinforce housing and enhance social life is a different kind of challenge – to produce a new urban environment.

The ecological dynamics of the three ecosystems provide the background for urbanization: the spontaneous propagation of pioneer plants is assumed as a preliminary “urbanizing” tool. The quality increases with the degree of biodiversity and ecological richness. New houses and collective activities are introduced: new paths are traced to connect them through the evolving greenery.

Shared spaces - A Frame for social life

The project handles the boundary between urban and rural space by weaving together the natural and urban components. The three natural ecosystems present on the site constitute the framework for future urbanisation.
